Anesthesia – surgery while you are awake or asleep?

Some spine surgeons will try to get your business by marketing “no general anesthesia”.

Less extensive spine surgery procedures can be done comfortably without putting you on the breathing machine that is used in most cases of general anesthesia.

My personal feeling is that this provides little advantage and can be uncomfortable.

The risks of standard general anesthesia these days are minimal. This is true even if you are older and have multiple medical problems.

I will be happy to perform your surgery without putting you completely to sleep if you prefer. But, if me or one of my loved ones was having spine surgery, I would strongly recommend standard general anesthesia.
